Summer Dos and Don’ts

Friday, June 21, is the first official day of summer!  Yea! It may be 60 degrees this morning but it is time to break out the grill and the outdoor furniture.
Are you ready?
I thought I would give you some dos and don’ts for the upcoming summer months. Yes, I thought I would rain on your parade a little.
DO wear sandals. Just make sure that there is plenty of support for your foot in the sandal. You want a heel bed that will give support to your foot and straps that will keep your foot stable. You can do this and still have cute sandals!
DON’T wear plastic flip flops everywhere! They don’t provide any support for your foot and they can cause injury. See http://www.epsfootdocs.com/2013/05/flip-flops-no.html
DO wear pool shoes or flip flops at the pool and in public showers. I know, it is the one time I think you can wear flip flops. You want to protect those feet and especially toes from fungal infections.
DON’T go barefoot! Especially if you are diabetic. The fungus and bacteria that you can pick up with bare feet should stop you but you can also injure yourself by stepping on glass, or nails or, anything sharp that is on the ground. See http://www.epsfootdocs.com/2013/05/5-reasons-why-you-should-not-go-barefoot.html
DO moisturize your feet. Wearing sandals during the summer months is extremely drying for your feet. Give them a little extra love with the moisturizer. Keep that skin healthy and moist. One tip – put the moisturizer on when your feet are damp either out of the shower or wash them before bed.  A warm water wash will open the pores and make them eager to accept that moisture.
DON’T forget the sunscreen – even on your feet.
DO make sure your athletic shoes are fitted correctly for all your summer fun. Don’t let them get run down and not provide the support that you need.
DO have a great summer and enjoy all the warmth and sun!
